Our Future
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined”. Henry David Thoreau
The Dunedin Rudolf Steiner School moved to its present site 10 years ago and is now at a stage when it needs additional permanent classroom spaces. A process of consensus design has established that the first stage will be a building with two classrooms, cloakroom, toilets, foyer and resource room. This will be built on the top section of the school’s 3.2 hectare site, above the area of native bush.
The architect’s design is one that makes the most of the buildings position on the site, providing excellent utilitarian classroom spaces that are also beautiful and fit to last for decades to come. Steiner stressed the importance of combining utility and beauty within classroom spaces and the positive effect this has on child development and on society.
The two storey classroom block drawings have been quantity surveyed and the cost is in the region of $900,000,
In addition, with the third kindergarten space opening at Maia, we will be extending that building block to provide a playgroup/ flexible teaching space, a staff room, toilets for staff and visitors, and we will be improving our current kindergarten facilities. The cost is estimated at $300,000.
.The new buildings will not only accommodate school classes but also frees up space for playgroups on the site, and provide a venue for other community events. It will be a significant development for the school, kindergarten and playgroups and also for the wider community.
Since the start of 2006 the school and kindergarten have experienced significant growth. The whole community has invested in the property at Maia. In 2008 the community took the leap of faith to build three temporary classrooms to accommodate the increasing school roll. Not only has the school’s roll increased substantially since 2006, but the kindergarten has expanded to two kindergartens with space for 35 children. There are also three active playgroups which extend out into the wider Dunedin community.
In 2011 one temporary classroom was replaced by a permanent structure. In 2015 we then built a small forest classroom at the end of 2015 – both fully funded by our parent body. The new building will replace the other two classrooms.
We have 60 school children, 40 kindergarten children and many playgroup children and parents. We have excellent committed teaching staff and a vibrant parent community. We have architects, engineers, and builders who have volunteered their work to allow the school to grow. We require $1.2 million for this project - for a building that will last for decades to come and that reflects the environmental and educational values of this community.
Your support would allow us to be able to develop and offer a unique education to a growing group of children in Otago. Please click here and take the time to read our brochure on the project.. If you would like to contribute to this project then please contact us.
